Pilates effective exercise for Professional Athlete

Written by
GARETH BALE does it, Ryan Giggs does it and today Andy Barcham is doing it.

And the Pompey winger is hoping adopting the methods of Pilates will signal an end to any injury worries.

Barcham features a not likely ally in tackling the exercise regime, too, in the form of Blues captain Ben Chorley.

Also a ten years ago, the recommendation of footballers taking part in a physical fitness system which focuses on breathing, positioning and controlled motion would have been offered quick shrift.

It’s precisely the kind of left-field concept people would have laughed off as hippy mumbo jumbo.

But the benefits of Pilates are proven and respected in today’s world.

Barcham experienced a well-documented thigh injury which hindered him for a great deal of the 2nd half of final season.

Today he seems that using up his new exercise could help consign those issues to the past.

Barcham said: ‘We’ve started doing some various things to help me.

‘I’ve taken up Pilates to try to assist my body. We’ve only just started but a few of the boys have been on it.

‘Ideally it is something which will benefit me for the remainder of the season.

‘Hopefully I'm able to improve, get better at it and my muscles feel the benefit of it.

‘We’ve been searching to do it for a while, Ben Chorley is into it and goes back home to do it.

‘There are a number of people whom do it and we’re lucky sufficient to have that option here today.

‘People would have laughed at the mention of it a couple of many years ago.

‘But there's a different part to the game now. People like Ryan Giggs have changed perceptions about Pilates and yoga.

‘It’s been slowly filtering in.

‘Quite a few of the boys have been on it prior to, so, as soon as we heard about it we knew it would gain us.

‘Louis Langdown (exercise and fitness mentor) and Duggo the physio (Sean Duggan) stated it would surely benefit me.

‘I’m looking ahead to see the advantages of it. We’re doing the work in the fitness center and sometimes you've got to cater for people’s requirements.

‘With there being a sharpness and explosiveness in my game I’m hoping this will help me.’

Using up Pilates clearly was an action into the unknown for Barcham.

He admitted to being surprised at the physical requirements required to-do it properly.

And the 27-year-old is pleased to acknowledge he is nonetheless extremely a great deal a beginner when it comes to the sessions.

Barcham stated: ‘I’m quite stiff at the minute and our teacher is having a bit of a giggle at me where she expects to me to balance, extend and do certain exercises.

‘I’ve just started so I’m a bit rubbish at the minute! It is really hard!

‘The very first day we went here it had been a real eye-opener.

‘They had been extending and making your muscles versatile.

‘There’s core and strength included.

‘It’s all the aspects you need in the modern game. Ideally we are going to feel the advantage of that.’

Pilates San Diego is a body conditioning routine that builds flexibility, muscle strength (making muscles lean and elongated, not “bulking up”), and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, his, and back.  It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core or center, and improving coordination and balance. Pilates San Diego system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty, from beginner to advanced.  Clients can proceed at their individual pace, and intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.
