Welcome to Pilates People in San Diego California! We are proud to announce our tenth year in business in the Carmel Valley area of San Diego. Pilates People offers a range of classes to suit everybody's goals and personal style. From the precision and control of traditional Pilates to the all-out intensity our Hardcore and Circuit classes, every class employs a new, fun and fresh approach to keep you on your toes. We also specialize in physical therapy and will bill your insurance plan for your treatment! We are conveniently located just off the Carmel Mountain Road exit of Interstate 5, on Sorrento Valley Road just north of the Coaster Station.
The Pilates Basics
German born Joseph Pilates brought his unique system of movement to the US in the 1920's. He called his early technique "The Art of Contrology" and believed that it is essential to "use the mind to control the muscles." The Pilates Program is built around form and control, how your body is constructed, and how to optimize its performance.
Joseph Pilates taught several basic principles which Pilates practitioners focus on:
- Breathing
- Flowing movement
- Precision & control
- Alignment
- Concentration
- Centering
- Integration
- Stability
Pilates was able to revolutionize physical training and rehabilitation with emphasis on improving movement patterns along with the mind-body connection. This, coupled with unique inventions in equipment design and function, is how Pilates has evolved into what it is today. Joseph Pilates realized the significance of integrating the nervous system with the muscular system. The idea that all movement begins with a nervous impulse and can be controlled by thought, opened a whole new approach to physical training, and this may have been Pilates' greatest contribution to the science.

Weaknesses or imbalances in the core can and will lead to a myriad of dysfunctions which can manifest themselves in all different areas of the body. Pilates trains patterns of movement rather than isolating single muscle groups, and therefore every movement you perform properly works your core.
